Website Consultation

The Isle of Lismore Community Website has been running for over 16 years. Back then it was fairly cutting edge and one of the first community websites created. We are aware that it certainly cannot be called “cutting edge” now! It is rather dated and somewhat disorganized.

Social Media has taken over a number of the functions of the website. However social media is transient and we feel that the website provides a valuable, permanent record of life on Lismore for future generations to look back on.

There has to be a fixed location for “brochure” information for the Island – Accommodation, Services, Webcam, Events list etc. There is also the potential for diversification e.g. creating an online shop for island products.

The website also serves as a central point for enquiries. We receive literally thousands of emails, from routine general enquiries to the weird and wonderful. (We have received and dealt with over 9000 emails since 2008).

Maintaining all of this involves a substantial amount of volunteer time.

In addition to this, bringing the website up to date would be a major undertaking and would require additional support from the community. Before we embark on this we would like to gather opinion as to whether the community sees any value in continuing with the website and if so we would welcome any comments or ideas you have.

Recent, in our opinion unfair, criticism of our management of the website has caused us to question whether the current committee has the support of the community. Perhaps it is time for a new group to have a fresh look at Lismore’s online presence.

Please email us your opinions.

December 2015 was the second wettest December since our records began in 1984 – nearly twice as wet as an 'average' December and over 18 times as wet as the driest December (1995). This helped to make 2015 the second wettest year for which we have records. January 2016, by contrast, was only a little wetter than average. There is more information here. Guidelines for Visitors – Consultation

Lismore Community Council (LCC) is in the process of producing two documents offering guidance for visitors to Lismore. One is for all visitors to the island and the other for people thinking of bringing a campervan.

At the LCC meeting on 21st January 2016 it was agreed that the Secretary would produce a first draft of each document and circulate them to other members of LCC for comments and suggestions. This has been done and the contributions added to create second drafts. Copies of these second drafts can be found in the shop (in the Community Council folder) and on the Facebook Noticeboard. We are now looking for comments and suggestions from all islanders. In particular Is the 'tone' right? Have we left anything out? Should anything be reworded?

Please let us know what you think of these drafts by 17th March 2016.

Update 21st March 2016: A list of comments received is now in the shop.

Scotland Bill

Lismore Community Council has received the following letter and briefing note from David Mundell MP (Secretary of State for Scotland). One idea mentioned is that some of the powers devolved to Holyrood should be devolved further to the local authority or community council level. If you have any thoughts on this, you can contact us here.
