Lismore’s four primary seven girls gave the island a great treat recently when they opened their Cozy Cakes Café for one day only with an enticing lunchtime and snack menu. The project had been weeks in the preparation with the girls managing every part of the venture under the guidance of classroom assistant Hazel MacCormick. They soon discovered that running a café even for a day needed a range of financial, communication, and design skills as well as the ability to serve the public. But first they needed to get a backer (the Parent Council) who would lend them the initial outlay, and then find a charity to receive their profits. But the bulk of the time was needed to work out how much food and drink they could afford to order, and how their café would be branded which meant deciding on the name, the menus, the logo, the table decoupage and the staff clothing. On the day everything was perfect and they greeted and served very professionally. It was hard work but a great learning project they told me, and they were very proud to have raised £250 for their two charities, Mary’s Meals and Asthma UK.

But this was not in fact their first chosen café day, that was planned for last December on the day Lismore was battered by the now famous storms when not only was there no power but the school had to close and everyone was advised not to travel. Even then, before the weather was really bad, they decided to deliver the soup and sandwiches around the island and, with the donations received, they were able to repay the money borrowed and did not have too much unsold food. Congratulations primary seven, it was a great café. And thanks and congratulations to classroom assistant and catering manager Hazel MacCormick who prepared the delicious food.

Sorry this is late - Thank you so much for a delicious Lunch served by smiling well versed waitresses. You did yourselves proud and there could be a job for any of you in the Cafe once you get to High School. I might have to commission Hazel for Cakes during the Summer. Thanks again
