Lismore primary school children paid a visit to Salen recently to see the raised beds where Roger and Gilly Dixon Spain grow a huge variety of vegetables.

The children are keen to start growing their own and to maybe offer them to school Catering Manager Hazel MacCormick to use for their school dinners.

Roger told the children that the no dig raised beds they saw had fostered an enormous increase in soil fertility and a great increase in the worm population. After seeing his beds covered for the winter in local seaweed, both a fertiliser and weed suppressant, the children asked a number of questions about their project which has the support of the Lismore Energy project run by John MacCormick and Stephen Green.

The children will have two raised beds which the energy group will supply and one will use the no dig method and the other will be dug so an interesting experiment will see which one the vegetables favour.

Roger presented the children with a signed copy of "Organic Gardening the natural no dig way" by Charles Dowding who wished the children well and said he will be keen to hear how the experiment goes.
