Inspirational concert

Islanders were treated to  an evening of top quality music recently from Mairi Campbell - fiddle viola and voice, Abby Newton - cello, and Kim Robertson - Celtic harp. The trio – all well known in their fields – have teamed up for a Scottish tour which they began in Lismore.

Mairi has roots on the island and we are fortunate to hear her reasonably often but Kim is from Wisconsin and Abby from New York. All three are classically trained but their music, while called Celtic folk, expands the traditions and is
both traditionally evocative and excitingly modern.
Kim is known as one of the pioneers in the American folk harp movement, and Abby has reinstated the cello at the centre of Celtic folk, where it always belonged she said,  and her love of Scotland and the music was heard in every note and beat.

The trio gave an eager and receptive audience gigs, reels and airs from many places with music that  was at times foot tapping, melancholy, very funny and always technically superb. Mairi’s singing of Ye Banks and Ye Braes as well as her own composition Smile or Cry was simple, moving, and unforgettable. Kim and Abby also played memorable solos.
