Tony Baker

4 January 2008

It was with great sadness that islanders heard of the death of Tony Baker after a very short illness. Tony and his wife Jennifer retired early from teaching so that Tony could pursue his great love of horticulture and their mutual love of being on Lismore. Together they set up Camas Growers in Laggan and Tony was soon distributing vegetable boxes  throughout the island and beyond.  Tony was also a very active member of the community working for the Comann Eachdraidh and at the school where he assisted with horticulture and science.

Tony's life was celebrated in a packed Lismore Parish Church by the Rev Di Williams, a personal friend, and where Jennifer and their children were surrounded by friends and family. They called it a celebration of a beautiful life and Tony was very much at the centre of the celebration. Anne Livingstone, a neighbour and great friend played the organ, Margaret MacDonald read a Gaelic prayer and sons Norman and Peter both read. At the centre of the service though was Jennifer who gave a beautiful eulogy with her daughter Guinivere standing by for moral support. Madelaine and Rachel sang one of Tony's favourite songs and Angus Nicholson was the piper.

At the grave side we were all invited to place some of the soil from Tony's beloved Camas into the grave.

Our love and support go to Jennifer and the family.
