Congratulations to Mairi Campbell who has won Citty Finlayson Scots Singer of the year at the fifth Scottish Trad Music awards in Fort William. The award was presented at a gala concert at the Nevis Centre on 1 December as part of the Highland 2007, a year long programme where hundreds of events and activities have taken place celebrating Highland culture in villages, towns and cities throughout the Highlands and Islands and beyond. Mairi was up against three other finalists; Scott Gardiner, Gordeanna McCullough, and John Morran.

The Awards, which give recognition to excellence within Scotland's thriving musical culture, encompass all aspects of traditional music from Gaelic Song, Folk, Scottish Dance music, to Pipe Bands and a host of others in between.

Mairi Campbell's voice is one of the great sounds of Scottish folk music today. She is a fine interpreter of the songs of Robert Burns as well as more contemporary Scottish material. In 2006 Mairi was chosen to sing “Icker in a Thrave” the Scots entry for the alternative Eurovision Song Contest for minority languages. She is also a fine fiddle and viola teacher.

She is also the voice with Dave Francis of the multi-talented Scottish duo known as The Cast.  Their three albums, Greengold, The Winnowing and Colours of Lichen, have attracted generous critical acclaim.  They bring a fresh approach to the most respected traditional material ( in the Scottish music, song and dance repertoire),  through their inventive use of vocal and instrumental harmonies and their own songs stand strong alongside the traditional material. In the Cast Mairi also plays fiddle and viola and Dave Francis - Guitar

She and Dave formed a duo in 1992, and this gave Mairi a context where she could perform their own songs alongside traditional material

As well as being the voice of the Cast, Mairi is musical director and arranger for Sangstream, an Edinburgh based community folk choir and is also a noted fiddler, violist and stepdancer.

Mairi runs her own fiddle courses on  Lismore.  Since 2006 both she and Dave have been tutors at the Coast String Summer music school in B.C
