Background information

We wanted to find out what islanders wanted of the Trust. We considered several ideas including the following.

For both of the ideas above, we were worried that people would be reluctant to attend because they would feel that they had already done this, that we hadn't moved forward. We were also concerned about the difficulty of getting a large number of people to come to any meeting at any particular time(s).

We decided to send out a questionnaire to everyone over 12 on the island (not just members) because we wanted as wide a range of views as possible. 175 questionnaires were sent out with return envelopes. We used the ideas from the January 2009 meetings while leaving room for anyone to suggest a new idea. We felt that a questionnaire had the following advantages over a meeting

For each idea, we wanted the person filling in the questionnaire to consider four things.

It was also decided to ask the head teacher at the primary school to talk to the children about what they would like to see and what they don't like.

The responses

It was a big questionnaire. There were 66 ideas. For each idea there were 12 possible valid responses. It took time to fill it in and we are very grateful to all the people who took the time to respond. Reading through the responses, it was clear that a lot of time and effort had been spent making sure that we had good information to work with. Thank you particularly to the 60+ people who took the time to add comments and suggestions. All of these will be considered.

The responses we’ve had to this questionnaire are a tribute to the wide variety of opinions on the island. Every idea had

  • An anonymous response is one with nothing in the Name box at the top of the second page of the questionnaire.
  • For a response to be complete, every idea had to have an answer and it had to be valid.
  • A response had no invalid answers if every answer given was valid. If a response only had one answer and it was valid, then it counts.
