G'day Just wanted to say Merry Christmas to all the family and friends. Granny, I'm writing you a letter so you can expect to get it sometime in June 2002 (just kidding) I will post it before Christmas, I promise. I was just looking at the pics of Mary's wedding and thought she looked lovely. How's the weather over there? It's supposed to be summer here but we haven't seen much sun yet, the grass is still green! It's usually all brown and crispy by this time. The website looks great, keep up the good work.

My Carmichael ancestors lived on Lismore until the mid-1700's and then immigrated to North and South Carolina. Other ancestors whom I believe may have come from Lismore were Monroes and McCalls. I really enjoyed the site and hope to visit Lismore. My parents visited several years ago, and my father experienced a strange feeling that he had been there before. Thank you again for having the web site, as it will serve my way to be connected until I can visit in person.

Most interesting website. We visited Lismore in June to see the church where my gggrandparents Duncan Buchanan and Ann Buchanan were married 11 Apr 1848. Duncan's family were tenant farmers at Invernahyle on the mainland and Ann's father would seem to have been innkeeper at Portnacroish. Thanks so much for your kind help, Mr. Black. I understand that there is a Mrs. Buchanan who lives near the church. Unfortunately we did not get a chance to visit with her. As we were getting off the ferry on leaving the island we were contacted by a relative of hers but were unable to get more information as the we had to take our car off the ferry and lost sight of her. I would be glad to make contact with any other possible family contacts.

I'm delighted to see that Lismore is on-line. My wife and I have had two very memorable trips to Lismore. Twice we have visited a man on the island who shares our same last name and who has great knowledge of the history and lore of the island, Mr. Donald Black. The photographs of the flora and fauna are beautiful and combined with the texts, on this web site, are like a trip back. My great great grandfather left Lismore more than 150 years ago to move to Islay. After some years he and his family moved on to Canada. The important role that the Island of Lismore had in our family history was locked away until I accidentally discovered this - previously unknown fact - when reading about old William's marriage on Islay. He is the one who contributed my name to the family. My nephew, who lives in Colorado is the 5th William Black to follow him in North America. Just today my wife had a call from my sister-in-law who lives in New Jersey asking whether or not we knew of a Lismore Black family crest. She would really like to know. Does any one know? Also if anyone reading this makes contact with Donald Black on Lismore say hello to him for me. Indicate that I have signed in to the web site and our e-mail address is listed. We would love to hear from him. Cheers! from Canada. I love the Lismore Community Web site --William Donald Black. Proud decendant of the "Great Garden"

I am so excited to find your WebSite! Some of you may remember mr from 2 trips to Lismore... Do you remember the Carmichael Caileigh? Then I was there again with my dear husband Joe Higdon ca 1994.. I would like to get in touch with Jesse Stewart..Ian Millar and The Baron Livingstone..Do any of them have an e-mail address? Congratulations to Dougal Black on the history (I think he is responsible). I do have extensive geneaology on Carmichaels who left the island.. and will be happy to share when I get it organized. When I collected it I did not have access to a computer so it is all handwritten on forms. Love to all my "cousins" in Lismore..

This is a family history quest. On my behalf Lindsay Campbell of Oban has spoken to Donald Black regarding Capt. Duncan MacKenzie Buchanan of Argyll Cottage, deceased May 1929 and buried on Lismore, born 1848 to John and Catherine Buchanan of Lismore. Am very grateful for Mr. Black's recollection of Capt. Buchanan's mariner's career and info re his shipwreck off Nova Scotia and subsequent marriage to Annie Lowther of Nova Scotia and their married life on Lismore. Had a son Sydney who married local Lismore woman (no children). Both now deceased. I have every reason to believe that Duncan Buchanan was my paternal great grandfather (as the result of an earlier liaison with one Margaret McNiven of Taynuilt) but as of yet I can't prove it definitively. Have a handful of unmarked old photos which I believe are of him, but again can't prove it. If there's anyone around that might be able to identify such photos (or any place such as heritage office, etc.) I would be most grateful. Any information at all regarding this Lismore Buchanan family would be of great interest to me and my family. Thank you.

Hi We have just returned home from our holiday in Port Appin. Whilst there we visited Lismore and fell in love!! What a beautiful place! On our walk back to the ferry after a wondeful but tiring day with our two young children, we met a very kind man, Farmer Livingstone at Laggin, who took us into his house and gave us an extremely welcome cup of tea and shortcake. Although neither of us have any recent Scottish ancestry, we feel very drawn to Scotland ans wish we could live somewhere as beautiful as Lismore. Maybe one fine day!! Best Wishes to all there. Hi! I'm your "old" minister's even older mother-in-law, and because they were going to Australia, I got a computer. It's such a joy to be able to keep in touch with what's going on by looking at your website. What a wonderful idea, and I'm sure Douglas and Alison treasure their wee peeks into life on Lismore too. Looking forward to our visit to you this weekend to stay with "Uncle" Duncan (Duncan Drysdale), and catch up on some overdue socialising on Lismore and back across the water at Port Appin and Appin. Did anyone know that we spent our honeymoon at Port Appin almost 38 years ago, and so for us, your part of Argyll is a very special place! Blessings on you all, Karen.

Well-designed, with lots of useful information. Having been to Port Ramsay last year, seeing the pictures brought it back, and makes me look forward to returning in a couple of weeks' time. The Postbus timetable link was not working when I tried. The news section is rather out-of-date, and gives no information on the foot and mouth restrictions, which is important, as we want to get around. Congratulations, anyway.

I like anything about Scotland! My mother was Carmichael, & we have a "Carmichael" book dating way back, like 13th century. Carmichael's were sept of Stewart of Appin clan. I would like to know if any Carmichaels remain on Lismore Island. Our people came here to the Americas and first settled around Fayetteville, N.C. then some migrated to Marion and Dillon counties in South Carolina where my mother's people and their people lived. I understand some relation fought against one another during the 1812 war, some for Great Britain and some for American colony.
Sir John Carmichael was knighted in 1422 durin the Hundred Years War, for unseating the english commander and winning a battle at Anjou in France.
So, a lot of histoy in Scotland, on both sides of family, I'm interested in visiting one of these days, hopefully sooner than later. I belong to Richmond Scottish Society in Richmond, Va.
Thank you for this great site and information.

I have been enthalled by this website and the obvious pride and hospitality that it oozes! I have put the location in my favourites, so I can easily find them back. I am more then just sure that one of these days we will make an appearance at this most beautiful and friendly place!

I was very happily surprised to find a web page for Lismore. Several years ago, I traveled to Texas to do some family research. Something most of us American's have to do because we are always moving all over the place. And can have backgrounds from everywhere. My maternal Grandmother was, Mamie Stewart McGregor Lewis. She was the only child of Dr. & Mrs. Malcolm McGregor. I found out in Texas that the McGregor family originally came from Lismore. They came to Fayetteville,NC. and later moved to Texas. They were good friends with the Charmichaels and the McLeans. They all married each other. The McGregors at this time were all Doctors. I have asked the web master of this site if there would be any information about them in Lismore. Hope to get a reply. Some day I hope to visit Lismore and see what it is really like. It certainly would be interesting to hear the stories of other immigrants. Best to you all, Dove Barton (McGregor)

Visited Lismore yesterday(7/7/01)with the group from Oban. We toured the island by mini-bus,with Donald Black who gave a very informative account of the island. I was particulary interested in Port Ramsey where my grand-mother was born. her name was Catherine MacCorquodale. I am hopeing to do the MacCorquodale family tree so if anyone has any information they can pass on I would be delighted.

A very lovely web site. I recently read that the McClay family line seems to have started in Lismore and I was wondering if any of the McClays still live in that area.
I took a sabbatical in Scotland in 1988 but at that time did not know where the McClays originated. We lived in Edinburgh for six months and had a wonderful time. My daughter is the only one of the family who traveled near Lismore as she climbed Mt. Nevis with her friends.
All the best to everyone in Lismore from the US. I wish that I could buy everyone there a mug of Maclay Beer. Hope to visit some day.

Hi, Its really great to have a web site on the island with some real local flavour. It has been around 17 years since I made a flying visit in a real pig of a storm and was thankful for a cuppa from Mrs Black(nee Macgregor ? or certainly related) up at Tirfuir. My interest in the island stems from researching my family tree but I've been drawn into the history. What a fascinating place it is. I have not made any connections with any of you locals yet but am sure there must be some still living on the island with a connection. Here's a brief summary descendant chart: Dougald Macgregor and Janet Connel m ca. 1814 Balnagowan Alexander Macgregor (b 1816, Balnagowan) and Mary Buchanan Duncan MacGregor(b 1860, Tirfuir) and Mary O'Grady Mary Macgregor and George Burrell my grandparents You can find more at my website :- http://web.ukonline.co.uk/tom.paterson/content1.htm and are welcome to mail me. Best of luck and hope to hear from you.

Your website is beautiful and brings back good memories of my two visits to Lismore in 1983 and 1986. My ancestor, Dugald Carmichael, came from Lismore in the 1700's to America. We have not been able to go any further back than him. I have traveled to Scotland many times, and in fact, was married in Scotland in 1990 at Carmichael, Scotland. Your website is very informative and will be most useful the next time we visit!
Thank-you

One of the best constructed local websites around - congrats. In order to make it better may I suggest that in the "Geology" section you alter the spelling of Dalriadan to Dalradian. One would think that it should be Dalriadan after the ancient kingdom of Dalriada but this sequence of rocks is in fact the Dalradian Series. Hey, but this doesn't detract one bit from a very informative site.

I think it is great, and I cannot wait for you to complete the rest of it. I would be very happy to help in any way I can. The photos are particularly good. I know Lismore is beautiful but it is also very photogenic. How about a photo on the title page/introduction - or is it very expensive? The flora and fauna website is also very impressive, especially the list of flowers. Some more photos here would also be good. Some requests: ferry timetables. the dates well in advance for planned whist drives, sales of work, dances, sports days and raft races....Also any chance of putting the minutes of the island council on the website under news and events - they are always a good way to keep in touch with what is going on and might be a good way to stir up support if any lobbying is needed. But maybe you do not want them to be too freely available to any old surfer. Congratulations!
