Stewart

If you have any information about Stewart's from Lismore please let us know and we will add it to this section

My sister and I are looking forward to visiting Lismore in late October early November.  We want to visit the grave of our ancestor Donald Stewart (Donald of the Hammers)and would like to meet any Stewarts still living there. Feel free to pass my e-mail address to any Stewarts if they would like to contact us.

My mother (Isobella Stewart Galloway of Oban) asked me to send you a photograph of her grandmother - Catherine Stewart of Lismore. I believe that the photo was taken in the early 1930s on Lismore. Catherine was born in 1859 and lived the early part of her life at Balure Cotter's House on Lismore. (Does it still exist?) Her mother was Mary Stewart who, in 1861 was described as a pauper. Along with Catherine she had Archibald, Dugald, Duncan, Hugh and James.

Catherine married a David Stewart in 1886 at Stirling and had a daughter Isabella (my grandma) in 1888, and 2 brothers - Campbell Burden Stewart and Dugald Stewart. When she was 3 in 1891 my grandmother is recorded as living at 74 North Street, Leven but then returned to Lismore.

Isabella married George Henry Galloway of Glasgow and settled in Oban. George was the cook on the lighthouse ship Hesperus.

I hope that this is of some interest to someone. My mother would be delighted if anyone has any family memories of the Stewarts.
